You wanna do funny?
Every year the Melbourne International Comedy Festival runs a nation-wide search for fresh comedy talent through its Raw Comedy competition. Hopeful aspirants from every corner of the continent start scanning their lives for material, hoping for a killer five-minute routine.
So far there are over 20 entrants in the Byron heat of Raw Comedy at the Byron Services Club on Monday, January 25, from 8pm. That’s a lot and the applications keep coming in so organisers have scheduled a second heat on Monday, February 8, to accomodate all the local talent.
Do you want to have a go? (Sure, it hurts, but it’s so good when it finishes.)
The North Coast is a strong contender when it comes to Raw, with more entrants than some states. (There’s something funny in the water.)
North Coast entrants have a history of doing well with Ellen Briggs of Mullumbimby making it to the national final four years ago. Ellen is now very much in demand in comedy rooms all around the country.
Hannah Gadsby recently won Raw and found herself coming second at Edinburgh’s So You think You’re Funny. Hannah has been touted as one of the most promising up-and-coming comics in the country. Hannah did her first spot after a Byron ACE comedy course and still uses a lot of the jokes she used for her very first performance.
Tickets to the Raw heats are $15/10. (They’re a lot of fun to watch.) For bookings phone 6684 3443 or get tickets at the club.
Mandy Nolan will MC.
