Workers back-paid almost $88,000 thanks to ombudsman

EIGHT workers at a Hervey Bay transport industry business have been back-paid a total of $82,900 following recent intervention by the Fair Work Ombudsman.

The workers were underpaid redundancy entitlements on termination of their employment last year.

After Fair Work inspectors contacted the business and explained its obligations, the workers were reimbursed all money owed without the need for further action against the employer.

Other recent recoveries included $5000 for a Maryborough truck driver underpaid penalty rates in 2010-11.

Fair Work Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson said when Fair Work inspectors identified a problem and contacted a business, most employers checked their records, realised a problem had occurred and fixed it immediately.

"When we find mistakes, we're here to assist and give practical advice to employers on how to voluntarily resolve issues," Mr Wilson said.

"These businesses have now corrected the errors that led to the underpayments and put processes in place to ensure they will not happen again."
Last financial year, the Fair Work Ombudsman recovered more than $8.6 million in back-pay for 4906 workers in Queensland and more than 148,000 Queensland employees and employers sought advice.
