THE playboy star of Wonderland, Michael Dorman, has a real-life passion for classic cars.
What was your first car?
A blue Holden HX 1976, Red 202. It was my pride and joy, and I put a new engine in it myself. But I gave it to my mate to use at his wedding and it got stolen two weeks later.
What are you driving now, and what do you love and hate about it?
I'm driving a white Holden HR '67 which has all original white walls. It is a beautiful car.
I love the bench seat but I hate that, while I'm in Sydney filming Wonderland, I'm not driving it at present as I have a hire car.
What cars did your family have while you were growing up?
We had a yellow F100. My grandmother had a Sigma and as a teenager I would take it out every now and then for a slow drive down her road. One day, I found the keys to my father's truck. I started the engine up and with its deep growl of the engine, scared myself enough to quickly turn the engine off. It was very amusing for my dad!
What is your greatest frustration on the road?
Impatience and lack of foresight.
Do you have any preferred driving music?
This is a very big question. Road trip music is incredibly important. It all depends on the length of the drive, but on a long drive, it's important to get the first song right as that sets the mood and you need to make sure the tunes follow an arc to match the trip. I listen to all kinds of music, but you do need lively music to counteract any mid afternoon slump.
If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be?
My missus. We always get up to good mischief!
What is your dream car?
I actually had it once - a VF 1969 Valiant. It was - and still is - my ultimate car. But, would you believe it, it got stolen!
