Women jailed for raping another woman in prison

TWO female prisoners who raped a fellow inmate while searching for hidden drugs have been sentenced to more jail time.

One of the sentenced women was from Gladstone.

A new prisoner at Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre in Wacol had Subutex - a drug used to treat heroin addiction - hidden in her vagina when a group of fellow inmates demanded she hand over the drugs.

She gave the drugs to them and two days later, in December 2013, she was threatened to hand over more drugs and was raped in a bathroom.

Two women charged with rape, Karissa Dimitra Antonatos, 25, and former Gladstone woman Nadine Rose Huxley, 38, have been sentenced to jail after they inserted their fingers and hands into the woman to try and find the drugs.

At Brisbane District Court last week prosecutor Mark Whitbread gave the judge a statement from the victim that outlined how the ordeal had impacted her, and he said the rape was the incident that mainly affected her.

He said the incident should fall in the "serious category" of rape because of the violence involved and the environment where it happened.

Both women pleaded guilty to two counts of rape.

Judge Brian Devereaux said the rapes occurred in front of other people.

"That adds to the demeaning nature of it," he said.

Huxley is behind bars at Townsville. The court heard at the time of the rape she was serving jail time for wounding someone.

The court heard Antonatos had spent time in solitary confinement since the incident and only spent one hour a day outside.

Antonatos and Huxley were sentenced to four years jail. Huxley will be eligible for parole in December 2017 and Antonatos will be eligible straight away, taking into account time they had served in jail.

Three other women were sentenced to more jail time last week for their involvement in robbing the woman and demanding she take off her clothes before she was raped.
