MANY men won't believe it but the statistics don't lie - women across the Northern Rivers are better drivers.
Of the 2963 people in the region who have received the 50% licence discount announced by Roads Minister Duncan Gay last June for having a clean driving record for more than five years, 1588 were women.
Despite being licensed to drive for less than seven years, 22-year-old Jade Grissell was one of those women.
The mother-of-two from Richmond Hill is one of 157,000 people who have saved up to $81 on their licence renewal, with 86,808 women, mostly in regional areas, taking up the lion's share of the discounts due to their good driving records.
Since she became aware of the clean licence scheme, Mrs Griffell said she wanted to continue to keep her clean driving record.
"When I received the letter I knew I had a month until I renewed my licence so I was really careful driving that month just to know that I would definitely get the discount.
"I am still careful now not to break the road rules and I think the incentive would definitely make a difference with a lot of people.
"Certain people obviously you will never be able to change the way they drive, but I think a lot of people who are hard up financially would definitely think about it."
Mr Gay said the scheme was designed to reward good drivers and give risky drivers an incentive to improve their record.
A study by the University of NSW over 12 months till the end of February found four times as many male drivers were involved in fatal crashes as women.
Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research figures revealed more than 72% of driving offences in the 12 months to last September were committed by men.
