Woman hit and killed by bus while changing tyre

A WOMAN was killed by a minibus on a North Sydney highway overnight after it ploughed into her while changing a flat tyre with the help of another motorist - who is now in shock after witnessing the horrifying moment.

The fatal accident took place on the Warringah Freeway at Crow's Nest about 12.30am this morning.

A woman, believed to be in her 20s, was understood to have been travelling towards the city when she was forced to stop to replace a flat tyre, with another male driver also pulling over to lend her a hand.

A minibus then rounded the corner and collided with both motorists' parked cars - also striking the woman in the carnage.

She suffered critical injuries, including massive damage to the legs, and died at the scene.

The man assisting her did not sustain any physical injuries, but was treated for shock.

All three vehicles were extensively damaged, and the eastbound lanes between Reserve Road and the Lane Cove Tunnel have been closed down.

The driver of the minibus was taken for mandatory blood and breath-testing.

It is unknown at this point if there was anyone on the bus, or if there are any other injuries.

A nearby resident, who did not wish to be named, said that the noise of the accident was so loud, that it sounded like it had happened inside her own residence.

"I thought the house blew up. I thought it was the gas or something," she said. "The whole house shook."

Her partner added, "The noise was horrendous. We came down and saw the lights - it's absolutely horrific."

Officers from the Crash Investigation unit attended and examined the scene.
