A 37-year-old Melbourne woman has died after she was hit by a car travelling at Townsend at about 7.20am today.
Emergency workers at the scene said it appeared the woman was jogging along Gardiners Rd, about 5km from Maclean when she was hit.
Police said the woman was heading towards Maclean when she was hit by a car travelling in the same westerly direction.
The collision occurred on the downhill section of a slight rise in the road, police said, and it was believed the deceased woman was running in the same lane as the car.
Police also confirmed that a witness had seen the deceased woman adjusting headphones about 10 minutes before the collision.
Police set up a crime scene and the driver of the car, a 19-year-old Yamba woman, was taken to Maclean District Hospital for treatment and mandatory blood testing. It is understood the woman is deeply traumatised by the collision.
The cause of the collision is unknown at this stage.
The Police Crash Investigation Unit has taken over the investigation.
The speed of the car at the time of the collision is unknown but the speed limit in the area is 80kmh.
It is understood the deceased woman was visiting family in Maclean.
