LISTEN: Man charged after waving machete at East Shores

Update

A 25-year-old man has now been charged with going armed to cause fear or alarm. After speaking to witnesses down at East Shores, police were able to track the vehicle to a Gladstone address

Earlier

GLADSTONE Police received a call someone with a machete at East Shores at lunchtime on Sunday.

Police Sergeant Dave Mooney said the witness reported someone got out of their car, and started "waving a machete around" and shouting.

Witness Sam Crighton saw the whole incident and said it appeared to be a "major overreaction" to not being able to get out of the car park properly at East Shores. He said the man had to drive over the kerb, and got angry at the people parked in the centre car park.

Mr Crighton said the man appeared to be in his 20s, was a P-plater, and had a lowered sports car.

"Swearing and waving a machete around is not appropriate in a kid-friendly zone," Mr Crighton said.

He spoke to our photographer Paul Braven here:

2.32PM THE short-lived incident at East Shores hasn't dampened the spirits of those down at the park, enjoying the sunshine, or affected the numbers. "It's packed here today, isn't it?" one woman said.

The incident appears to have gone by unnoticed by most who are down there now. Those we spoke to - including some having a children's party - didn't notice any sign of the disturbance, although some saw police talking to witnesses.

Earlier

AT 1.05pm today Gladstone Police received a call about reports of someone with a machete at East Shores.

Police Sergeant Dave Mooney said the witness reported someone got out of an old brown sedan, and started "waving a machete around" and shouting.

The person has now left the area; we understand they drove towards the yacht club, before heading down Goondoon St.

Police are now trying to find out what has gone on, including whether or not anyone else was involved.
