Winter wonderland is on its way

CHANNEL 10 is about to transform into a winter wonderland for its extensive coverage of the Sochi Winter Olympics.

The broadcaster is providing round-the-clock coverage on ONE, as well as 12 hours of content daily on Ten.

Former speed skater and gold medallist Steven Bradbury is in Ten's commentary team, which will spend nearly a month in Sochi.

"I feel privileged to be able to still get a guernsey to go even though I'm not an athlete anymore," he told The Guide.

"It captures the hearts and minds of the whole world. To be there on the ground gets that adrenaline flowing and you feel like you're a little bit of a part of it still.

"Those feelings you can't buy. They're the feelings I had to train my whole life to get."

Russia has spent more money on this month's games than any other country has spent on the Olympics, summer or winter.

"I've heard a lot of amazing reports over the past four months about what they've done at the park in Sochi," Bradbury said.

"It's a new tourist hub for eastern Europe. It's right on the ocean at the Black Sea and goes up steeply to 750m, so there's summer and winter trade there."

Australia is sending its largest winter games team. Bradbury reckons our best medal hopes are with defending champions Lydia Lassila (women's aerials), Torah Bright (women's snowboard half pipe) and Alex 'Chumpy' Pullin (men's snowboard cross).

He's impressed with Jana Pittman's crossover from hurdles but thinks it will take her a few years to settle into her new sport, bobsleigh.

"It seems to be a sport where the driver needs many years to be an expert driver," he said. "Jana has put on so much muscle bulk and is one of the better pushers in the world."
