What a chance for Sam

HERVEY Bay's Sam Whatman has kicked - or saved - a major goal with the youngster named in an English Premier League team's youth side for this weekend.

The former United Warriors goalkeeper left Australia on June 19 for Europe to chase a professional career.

He trialled with German club SV Elversberg, and has since moved to England, where he is currently trialling with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 18-year-old received some of the biggest news of his career on Thursday night (AEST) when Whatman was called into the Wolves' Under-21 line-up.

Whatman barely believed the huge news.

"I was speechless when I got the call-up, I thought it was a joke," he said.

It is no joke, and the man who helped save United Warriors to the sixth round of the FFA Cup will don Wolverhampton's jersey this week.

Whatman always dreamed of playing football at the highest level, but it wasn't until a similar trip in 2012 that he realised it was something he could accomplish.

Whatman was so determined - and confident - he booked a one-way ticket.

That dedication has paid off, and Whatman is now learning from some of the best in the game.

"The trip has been life-changing," he said.

"I feel like my game has gone to that next level since being over here.

"Wolves has been amazing; they have been really good and welcomed me in nicely."
