Video: Whale frolicks at 1770 as couple tries to repair boat

A FAILED motor is usually the cause for distress for fishermen, but for Ursula Wasmund it was a blessing in disguise.

After an afternoon of fishing, she and her partner Dean were returning home to Seventeen Seventy when a whale swam past their boat.

She had seen whales off the Seventeen Seventy headland before, but not like this.

"The whale started jumping out of the water a few times," she said.

"It was just lucky that I had the camera handy, but I zoomed in from my phone so its bit blurry but that was amazing I got that moment captured," she said.

1770 Marina Cafe employee Ruth Geck says their region is blessed to have whales migrate past their headlands throughout the year.

But when she recently went on a whale watching tour in Hervey Bay, she thought her hometown could benefit from something similar.

The 1770 Marina Café employee said she often sees whales off the region's headlands.

But she said they just need to figure out how to make them stay.

"I was doing wedding hair at Rocky Point there was two there playing and they were hanging around a lot

"It would be great for tourism it'd be special for the locals too," she said.

Whales migrate past the region in search for warmer waters from May until November.
