Watch out for turtles and win

AUSTRALIAN Seabird Rescue is running a competition to encourage North Coast residents to keep an eye out for turtle tracks and nests on beaches.

If you are the first person to alert the wildlife rescue group to a new nest, you will receive a prize pack valued at $40.

ASR’s general manager, Keith Williams, said on average 20 turtle nests were found in the area each summer.

Mr Williams said the competition, open until March, had a serious purpose.

The group wants to relocate turtle eggs at risk of being washed away because of beach erosion.

He said the June storms had created many steep cliffs and turtle nests at the bottom of the cliffs could be inundated by king tides.

“We have to spot the nest the same day it’s laid,” he said.

Turtle tracks look like giant tractor tracks and run from the water to the dunes.

Most of the nests laid on the North Coast will be from the endangered Loggerhead turtle.

Moving one nest could save 100 hatchlings.

If you find a nest, call ASR on 66 862 852.
