Voices Faure church

Every Thursday evening the hills around Bangalow are alive to the sound of music emanating from All Souls Anglican Church Hall as the 20 members of Spiritsong (pictured) rehearse.

The results of the choir's hard work can be enjoyed in St Kevin's Catholic Church, Bangalow, next Thursday, October 29, at 7.30pm; and again in St Mary's Catholic Church, Casino, on Sunday, November 1, at 2pm.

Some fine choral tunes are on the program including Faure's Messe Basse - written in 1880 and full of magnificent lyricism and restrained melodies. Faure detested the large scale, grandiose and operatic style of his fellow composers, preferring restraint and simplicity.

Another tune by Faure that the choir will perform is Cantique de Jean Racine, an earlier work.

These pieces were written specifically to be performed in the intimate space of a church rather than a concert hall.

Also on the program is Te Deum by Purcell, a top song written two centuries earlier in honour of St Cecilia's day.

These works will be performed with organ accompaniment by Warren Whitney who is both choir director and organist.

Entry is a measley $10 at the door.
