Up up, Coles’ sales figures are up

ONE of the nation's biggest supermarket chains, Coles, has reported solid growth during the last quarter of 2012.

The retail chain is one of several subsidiaries of Wesfarmers, including Bunnings and Kmart, which revealed positive growth late last year.

Coles sold $7.7 billion worth of liquor and food in the three months to December, up 5% on the $7.3 billion worth of sales in the previous quarter.

Managing director Ian McLeod said the turnaround was due to a commitment to improve quality, service and value.

In its second quarter retail sales results, the company revealed food and liquor sales in Coles' outlets grew 3.8%.

At the company's other chains, Bunnings reported 6% sales growth, with Kmart up 3.5%; Target up 1.2% and Officeworks steady, despite growth in online sales.

The supermarket currently owns 753 stores and 895 liquor stores and hotels around the country.
