THE community of Ulmarra is still in the process of cleaning up the mess from the January flood, but as one resident said, "this is Ulmarra and we're always on flood watch".

Wayne Brown said he would not start lifting equipment out of his earthmoving business until he saw water running down the road.

"Who really knows what is going to happen?" Mr Brown said.

Last month Mr Brown said the water just "roared" in front of his home.

"The kids were riding surfboards in the street," he said.

He said most people were still getting over the flood and as an earthmoving contractor he had been helping many of them fix things up.

But over the past week it was too wet to get out and work.

Around the corner at Bernie Crammond's house the "smell of flood mud" remains.

Mr Crammond's response was straightforward: "Not again".

"I have to lift everything up again," he said.

During the January flood Mr Crammond had to spend about a week sleeping at the Ulmarra Hotel.

It is just a fortnight since he finished cleaning up and he still had some repairs left to complete.

Floors, furniture and carpet all had to be thrown away.

Mr Crammond said the support he had received from his neighbours had been a huge help, with many helping out.
