UPDATE: No screams alerted neighbours to the fact that a mother and her 12-year-old daughter had been stabbed to death in Newtown this morning.
It began like any other day on Redwood St, a quiet suburban neighbourhood in which most residents "keep to themselves", according to neighbour Phyllis Sutton.
It was rubbish collection day and Ms Sutton stepped onto her front lawn to take out her bin when she saw the flashing lights and police tape surrounding the rental property across the road.
"I had no idea... I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary," Ms Sutton said.
"Everyone around here pretty much keeps to themselves.
"The people from that house could probably have walked down the street and I wouldn't know who they were.

"Occasionally we get some riff-raff driving along and breaking our letterboxes, but other than that it's pretty quiet."
Police rushed to the home after the stabbing was reported at 9.30am.
It is believed the 16-year-old suspect himself notified police of the deaths.
The owner of the rental property, who lives in Grafton in New South Wales, said the family had been tenants "for quite some time".
She had not heard any news about the double-fatality which occurred within her property, nor did she know the family personally, using a Toowoomba real estate agent as an intermediary between herself and the tenants.
The suspect has been taken to the Toowoomba Watchhouse for questioning. He is believed to be a juvenile.
The street remains a crime scene.
