WILL Power has lost his lead in the IndyCar drivers' championship after the Toronto Indy this morning (AEST).

Power, who started second on the grid, led from lap five until lap 26 when the Toowoomba driver pitted.

He sat in 11th after the stop but with the majority of cars ahead of him needing to pit, he was in a strong position.

But his chances nose-dived when Josef Newgarden made contact with his No.12 Team Penske car.

Power had to pit to replace a flattened left front tire and again returned to his team soon after to have a new nose fitted.

He ended up finishing 15th, one lap behind winner Ryan Hunter-Reay.

The victory is Hunter-Reay's third-straight which matches Power's feat from earlier in the season and sees the American take the lead in the drivers' championship.

Hunter-Reay sits on 335 points, 34 clear of Power in second.

Power has not finished on the podium since winning the Sao Paolo Indy 300 back in April which has allowed the chasing pack to pull back his lead in the series.

He still leads the road course championship though, although Hunter-Reay is now just 28 points behind him.

Power will now contest the Edmonton Indy on July 22.
