MORE ON THE PM'S VISIT:
He called a snap press conference earlier today with Mr Truss -- who is the local member for Wide Bay -- to announce that the C section of the Bruce Highway upgrade of the Cooroy to Curra bypass project would be under construction from "early next year".
Mr Abbott then faced questions on whether Western Australia deserves a larger slice of GST revenue and the threat of the amphetamine ice.
The drug is now being targeted by a national taskforce announced by the Prime Minister earlier this week.
Mr Abbott said allegations of ice use by Navy personnel in Western Australia showed how insidious the epidemic was.
"It's more addictive than heroin. It damages you more than heroin. It is linked to extreme violence, to very serious mental health illnesses," he said.
" That's the scourge that ice is."
A new public campaign against the drug is coming soon, he said.
