Time to come clean on trolleys

Believe it or not, there are two apparently new shopping trolleys in this picture. I have made two personal visits to the owners, when reports were (1) noted on a sheet of paper, and (2) written into what would be known as a “day book”, each action being noted by pleasant Service Counter staff.

I note the new kid on the block has a refundable hire system with their trolleys and, although this has probably eliminated some pocket money jobs for our youth, it’s odds on they do not have abandonment losses. Two other major supermarkets seem to have recently released batches of new trolleys, but no system to ensure their return.

Because these abandoned or uncollected trolleys are regularly washed with whatever flows down the gutters, and in this instance a stormwater outlet, I ask what regulations do the three health authorities, namely local government and state and federal governments, have in respect of the regular sanitising of these trolleys?

Of concern is unwashed hands and, with respect to parents and carers of small children seated in trolleys, can we really be sure of the actual cleanliness of these used facilities? I have in mind for instance that a paper napkin be provided when children are seated in trolleys and a dispenser of hand sanitiser be available where trolleys are collected for instore use.
