BUDGET EXCLUSIVE: Three new schools to open on Coast

A NEW high school at Caloundra South and new state primary and special schools will open for the start of school in 2021 after funding announcements made ahead of the Queensland Budget to be brought down on Tuesday.

The new schools will service expanding populations in the two areas which were brought forward for development outside previous planning time lines by the Bligh Labor Government in 2008.

The new special school would take pressure off Currimundi and Nambour special schools which have experienced a massive increase in enrolments during the past decade.

They make up three of the four new schools to be funded under the budget with the other, a new primary school, to be built at Pimpama on the Gold Coast.

Buderim MP Brent Mickelberg said it was pleasing to see the government had listened to the community and that it was committed to opening the Palmview schools for the start of the 2021 year.

He said, however, that detail was still to be provided as to whether or not the school would launch from Year 1 to Year 6, or just as a first-year cohort.

Mr Mickelberg said if it was to open only for Year 1 and Prep it would create logistical nightmares for parents with children also attending Chancellor State College.

He expressed disappointment that what he said was a much-needed high school for the rapidly growing suburb had not been included.

A community campaign asked the question which the latest State Budget is set to answer. Caloundra South will have a new high school operating from the start of the 2021 school year.

However, he said a new special school had been desperately needed.

"It was always a case of where. It's good to see that commitment as well," Mr Mickelberg said.

He said there were a number of site options for the new schools but did not believe land had been set aside at this stage.

The first-term Member for Buderim was also hopeful of investment in the Sugar Rd-Mooloolaba Rd interchange.

He said additional police officers would also assist in addressing an uptick in youth offending across a number of suburbs.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the schools' investment along with the new Inner City South State Secondary College in Dutton Park would increase to 26 the total number of new schools opened by her government since 2015.
