The jazz man blows big in Byron

Vince Jones would have to be THE voice of Australian jazz.

Vocalist, trumpet player and composer, Vince Jones’ music includes original songs and contemporary versions of jazz standards.

The heart of Vince’s work lies at the crossroads of Afro-American blues and the melodies of the Celtic folk tradition. The songs he chooses – written by him or by others – always make an original, personal statement.

Vince and his band – Matt McMahon (piano), Simon Barker (drums) and Ben Waples (bass) – will perform two shows this Saturday and Sunday, April 24 and 25, at the Byron Community Centre. The shows will be recorded live and will form part of a new album to be released later in the year.

This very cool show, presented by Mullum Music, starts at 8pm. Tickets are $26/16 from All Music & Vision in Byron (6685 7611), in Ballina (6686 8111) and in Lismore (6622 5399). Or at www.mullummusic.com.

Freebie: The Echo has two copies of the double CD Gold (The Best of Vince Jones) to give away to two lucky readers. To go in the draw to win, phone 6622 8888 between 10.15 and 10.30am next Tuesday, April 27, and tell us if this great Aussie talent was born in a) Wollongong, b) Brisbane or c) Glasgow.
