The famous faces of Our Kids

When local photographer Jacklyn Wagner prepares to take photographs for the annual Our Kids calendar, she always talks to the parents first to find out what’s special in their child’s life at that time.

“Photographically it’s challenging because often the kids have disabilities and they are novices to the camera, so I always have those conversations beforehand to find out what interests them,” Jacklyn said. “Finding that thing – the new pair of gumboots they just want to wear all the time or that favourite teddy bear – it means I can engage with them and work with them on their level.”

The 12 children featured in the 2010 Our Kids calendar, which was launched yesterday, have all spent time in Lismore Base Hospital’s special care nursery or children’s ward – for which the calendar is a fundraiser.

This year every child has something on their head.

“They might have on grandma’s hat, or their favourite baseball cap… one boy even has a bucket on his head,” Jacklyn said. “It’s really lovely working with them, just gorgeous. They’re so excited and the parents are so excited and they feel, and they are, really special. They’re famous!”

This year the Our Kids calendar was launched along with the second Our Kids Christmas CD, which features the talent of over 100 local students singing Christmas carols.

Rounding out the project, one set of the calendar images were framed individually and these photos have now gone on display at Lismore Base Hospital.

“This is a wonderful community project celebrating the lives of local children,” Our Kids fundraising co-ordinator Rebekka Battista said. “The calendar and CD combo will be on sale at a retail price of $20. This year our aim is to be sold out within a month.”

The calendar and CD will be on sale at McDonalds in Lismore and Casino, Budget Eyewear, East Ballina Foodstore, Kyogle Dentists, Kyogle Pharmacy, Lennox Head Pharmacy, MacDonalds Pharmacy, The Northern Rivers Echo office, Scott’s Newsagency, Book Warehouse, Angus and Coote and The Left Bank Café.

Or you can order one by emailing the Our Kids office at ourkids.LBH@ncahs.health.nsw.gov.au.
