CBD funeral home to benefit mourners, businesses: director

A NEW funeral home planned for the Lismore CBD will be the only locally owned and operated funeral home in Lismore and the greater Northern Rivers region.

Traders at the Binney Family Funerals intended location of Magellan St have expressed reservations about the plan, saying it was a poor fit for the types of businesses now operating there.

However, Binney Family Funerals director Warwick Binney said the location would benefit both surrounding businesses and mourners.

"It is our intention to conduct meaningful funerals which show understanding for the sensitivities of families in the Northern Rivers area," Mr Binney said.

"For that reason, we have deliberately chosen a site which can only accommodate a small chapel for private, intimate funerals and professional rooms with facilities for arrangements.

"All advertised funerals will be conducted off site.

"The reason for choosing the Magellan Street site is that it is very convenient for those coming to the facility.

"People are often very distressed when they attend a funeral home and to have cafes, florists and gift shops within walking distance makes things that bit easier if they need a cup of tea or they want to get some flowers.

"We believe the facility will increase business for retailers close to the facility such as the cafes, coffee shops, florists, fashion and gift wear shops all of whom will benefit from people attending."
