Thank you for caring

BE CARE AWARE was the theme of this year's National Carers Week, pointing to the fact that carers keep caring and need ongoing support.

This year, the Northern NSW Local Health District printed thank you cards and sent just under 200 to the Lismore area.

It was only a small gesture of appreciation, but it went a long way for those who care for others.

Dawn and Bruce Watts care for their 38-year-old grandson Chris on a daily basis.

Chris has schizophrenia and has been cared by his grandparents since the age of 14.

"We are not heroes. Like any other carers, we are ordinary people," Mr Watts said.

They may be ordinary people but they do extraordinary work, according to Northern NSW Mental Health Program coordinator Dr Mim Weber.

"The thank you card is a small way in which mental health services can acknowledge the crucial role carers play in supporting and caring for someone with a mental illness," Dr Weber said.
