Thank God for the Salvos
In this day and age of corporatisation of charity, it’s good to know you can still count on the Salvos.
This weekend is the Salvation Army’s annual Red Shield Appeal and captain Lindsay Reeves is asking people to give what they can, when representatives come knocking.
“Locally the Salvation Army provides crisis accommodation for victims of domestic violence; rehabilitation services, Christmas hampers for people in need and hand out meals to those who need them every day,” Lindsay said. “It’s important to help our fellow Australians and all the money raised from this appeal stays in Australia.
“Recently we have been seeing more and more people who need to access our services. Electricity has been going up, rent has become more critical in many ways and people are doing it tough. We provide the same services but recently the numbers of people we see have been creeping up because it’s getting more difficult.”
Captain Reeves said more volunteers to knock on doors were needed and that people should just show up to the Salvation Army, 32 Cambridge St, Goonellabah at 9.30am on Sunday, May 30. If you wish to donate, there will be representatives at Lismore Square all this week.
