SPANISH superstar Rafael Nadal is set to make his return from a serious knee injury in January's Australian Open.

The former World No.1 told CNN he was unlikely to be back on the court in time to play for Spain in next month's Davis Cup final against the Czech Republic.

"I don't know if I will or I won't, I need to work with much less intensity than required for the Masters Cup or the final of the Davis Cup," he said.

"Now, I'm happy to return at the Australian Open and be 100% competitive."

Nadal has played just once since winning the French Open, a shock first-round loss at Wimbledon.
