AUSTRALIAN Emily Seebohm has been pipped on the line by United States' Missy Franklin in the women's 100 metre backstroke.
The fastest qualifier for the final, Seebohm was under world record time at the turn but faded heading into the wall.
Franklin, sensing her rival was on the wane, turned on the speed, catching and then passing the Australian with only a few metres to swim.
An emotional Seebohm broke down after the race, a spent force after seeing her dreams of golden glory disappear.
"I wish I could have finished it off," Seebohm said through tears.
"I was hurting a lot, I don't know what went wrong.
"Wish there was a little bit more I could have given."
