Taxpayers entitled to whine about wine

A NEW report says Australians pay more than a billion dollars a year to subsidise the wine industry.

Australia Institute modelling found wine was taxed on wholesale value rather than alcohol content - like beer and spirits - meaning cheap wine attracted only $3 in tax per litre of alcohol.

Bottled beer manufacturers pay more than 10 times as much and spirits attract an alcohol excise of $80 per litre of alcohol.

The report found an extra $1.4 billion in tax revenue would be raised if wine were taxed in the same way as beer.

Foundation of Alcohol Research and Education chief Michael Thorn said it was blatant corporate welfare.
