Taxis drive new partnership

People with transport difficulties who wish to visit loved ones in hospitals and nursing homes can now get subsidised taxi fares and door-to-door service thanks to a new partnership between Northern Rivers Community Transport (NRCT), the Lismore Taxi Co-operative and Casino Cabs.

“People who are eligible will be given vouchers from NRCT and then they can make their own bookings when it suits them,” NRCT manager Colleen Thomas said. “People often want to visit after hours or on weekends, so this is a great way for us to be able to offer those services.

“The taxi drivers are more than happy to provide that little bit of extra assistance to make life easier for passengers. NRCT has been at capacity providing individual trips to medical appointments so this is a great way to expand services.”

Colleen said the taxi drivers had been very willing to go that extra mile for the elderly, those with disabilities and their carers.

“We have drivers especially trained to deliver these services,” Lismore Taxi Co-operative spokesperson Stephen Haywood said. “The drivers will extend a helping hand to and from the door and provide assistance with shopping and wheelie walkers where required.”

The expanded door-to-door service is funded by NSW ADHC (Ageing Disability and Homecare) under the HACC program (Home and Community Care).
