Sydney FC chief quits A-League club

FOOTBALL: SYDNEY FC chief executive officer Tony Pignata has stood down from the A-League club after seeing them claim their first trophy in seven years on Sunday.

While the Sky Blues were able to announce the retention of Milos Ninkovic on a marquee deal on Tuesday, the A-League Premiers and Champions will now be looking for new leadership at the top with Pignata deciding to return to Melbourne once he winds up on June 2.

"I have had wonderful five years here at Sydney FC," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

"I would like to thank David Traktovenko and chairman Scott Barlow for their support.

"To the board, staff, (coach) Graham (Arnold) and players it has been an amazing season and to cap it off with the double is the icing on the cake.

"I now look forward to my next adventure and will return home to Melbourne before taking a good break."

From the whirlwind trip to Turin to secure the deal for Alessandro Del Piero in 2012, to ending years of coaching instability with the appointment of Graham Arnold, Pignata leaves with the A-League club's memberships and attendances on the up.

"On behalf of myself and the Sydney FC board of directors, I'd like to thank Tony for his service over the last five years," club chairman Scott Barlow said.

"He has done an excellent job in bringing stability and success to our club both on and off the field.

"On top of his list of achievements, Tony will be remembered for his enormous passion for Sydney FC and the game of football, and also for the fantastic rapport he has built with our supporters.

"I would like to wish him and his family all the best for the future."
