SUVs fuel Australian car market improvement

AUSTRALIA'S love for sports utility vehicles is fuelling new car sales.

According to VFACTS statistics released today, automotive sales accelerated in April compared to the same time last year - figures for the month were up 1.2% while year-to-date numbers have improved 3.5%.

Passenger car sales are down 10.3% (4005 vehicles), but the SUV segment is riding high with a 17% improvement (4307). Light commercials were also up, by 482 vehicle sales (3.4%).

The Toyota Corolla was the top selling car in April, with 3238 vehicles sold. The Corolla was followed by the Toyota Hilux (2789), Mazda3 (2365), Hyundai i30 (2298) and Ford Ranger (2200).
