Surgery for Silva after leg break

The Brazilian was recovering in hospital yesterday after the injury which happened in his second-round loss to unbeaten American Chris Wiedman in Las Vegas on Sunday.

The injury occurred when Silva threw a left leg at Weidman who checked the kick with his own leg.

Silva immediately collapsed to the canvas, yelling out in pain as referee Herb Dean waved the fight off.

UFC officials issued a statement yesterday saying Silva had broken the tibia and fibula in his left leg. A steel rod has been inserted into his tibia, while the fibula has been stabilised and does not require surgery.
