The real reason life-saving surgery cost so much for Jackson

SURGEON Charlie Teo personally received only a small portion of the $80,000 fee charged for Casino teenager Jackson Byrnes' life saving operation this week, it has been revealed.

There has been some controversy over the amount of money the Byrnes family had to find to pay for the urgent brain surgery performed by Dr Teo on Wednesday.

The successful operation removed more than 90% of the tumour that was threatening to kill Jackson, with the remainder to be dealt with through chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

It has now been revealed Dr Teo's personal fee to operate was less than 10% of the $80,000 asked of Jackson's family to fund the operation.

Half of the surgery and post-op costs, estimated at up to $90,000, went to the Prince of Wales Private Hospital.

Those costs included hiring the operating theatre, post-operative intensive care, and the use of specialists in the operation, including an anaesthetist.

Dr Teo had no control over these costs.

Speaking from Sydney on behalf of the family, friend Billy Jackson said Dr Teo had also offered to source some medical staff from the public system to help reduce the costs where he could.

"Dr Teo is doing an amazing job," Mr Jackson said.
