Surf warning for entire NSW coast

A DANGEROUS surf warning has been issued for the entire NSW coastline.

Surf Life Saving NSW has urged all swimmers, surfers, and rockfishers to check the latest forecasts before heading out for a day on the coast.

A southerly swell with waves up to 4m has been forecast for today.

Lifesaving manager Andy Kent said coastal users should take the time to assess the environment before heading out, as the long swell period could create a false impression of the conditions.

"The best way to get an idea of the conditions is to watch the waves through an entire cycle," he said.

"A rock platform that may look like a safe fishing option could in fact be under water when larger waves sweep through.

"If you have any doubt about the conditions, it is best to not go out but please talk to lifesavers, lifeguards, and locals especially if you are holidaying at an unfamiliar beach."

Extra care should also be taken by boat skippers crossing bars, rock fishers, swimmers and surfers.

Some beaches may be closed. Check the Beachsafe website at http://www.beachsafe.org.au.
