Support for Abbott plummets as Labor rises from ashes

THE support that saw Tony Abbott elected Prime Minister just three months ago has eroded to levels not seen since 2011, the latest Newspoll shows.

Results in the News Limited poll found primary support for the Abbott Government fell to 40% at the same time of a seven-point rise for Labor.

That result returns primary support for the government to levels last recorded in March 2011.

It found a three-point rise in the two-party preferred support for Labor in the past fortnight, with a corresponding fall in support for the Coalition.

The fall has largely coincided with a public spat over education funding and spying allegations affecting Australia's foreign relations.
