Mayor Whitney welcomes Angelina Jolie to the Whitsundays
NO, you won't be mistaken if you think you've caught a glimpse of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in the Whistundays - it really is them.
The couple has flown in to Airlie Beach as Jolie continues to direct her film Unbroken, which is being shot in various locations around the country.
Filming is thought to be taking place at Funnel Bay, a small town between Shute Harbour and Airlie Beach.
Photos of the couple arriving at Whitsunday Coast Airport on Sunday have been making the rounds on social media.
Whitsunday Mayor Jennifer Whitney welcomed the couple to the region and said having the production in town would give the economy a $1 million boost.
"Whitsunday Regional Council has been working hard behind the scenes to secure the filming of some scenes for this movie here in the Whitsunday region," Cr Whitney said.
"Working with Screen Queensland and the Queensland Government, the council has built a strong relationship which has led to Angelina Jolie filming here.
"We worked hard last year to secure a Temporary Local Planning Instrument, so Brad Pitt's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea could be filmed here, and through that process, a relationship was formed which has led to Unbroken being filmed in the Whitsunday region.
"Council was able to help with securing a location for filming for Unbroken and worked through the council approval process necessary to shoot here," she said.
It's not known how long the couple will be in the Whitsundays. It's thought they also spent Christmas last year on Hamilton Island.
