Man lashes out at step-daughters with a mop charged

A SUNSHINE Coast man who hit one of his step-daughters with a mop and another with a thong was so angry with the girls that he "just couldn't think right", a court heard yesterday

The 34-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the girls' identities, pleaded guilty in the Maroochydore Magistrates court to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm in October and November last year.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Jamie Baker said that on the first occasion, the man had been upset with his 13-year-old stepdaughter over what he considered to be her excessive mobile phone use.

Sgt Baker said the man had been heading to the lounge room to speak to her when he passed the mop in the hallway, picked it up, and swung it sideways at the girl.

He later noticed a mark about the size of a 20 cent piece on her hip.

The court heard that on the second occasion, he hit his 10-year-old stepdaughter in the face with a thong, causing a nosebleed and bruising, after she had a noisy argument with her sister.

Sgt Baker said the man told police during subsequent interviews that he felt bad afterwards because the girls "didn't deserve it".

Solicitor Chelsea Emery said her client had a good relationship with the children, who regarded him as a father figure, and was working on anger management.

The man was placed on 12 months probation. No conviction was recorded.
