Bowls: Southies cover themselves in glory at state finals
SOUTH Lismore No 1s covered themselves with glory at the state pennant finals at Dapto, making it through to the final before going down to the power-packed Taren Point 70-54.
The score wasn't an indication of the closeness of the result - the Southies won two rinks to Taren Point's one. Ben McCall's team won 21-18, Jamie Eichhorn's won 23-20 but Glen Pitts went down 32-9 to a team skipped by international Wayne Turley.
South Lismore made it to the final after all seemed to be lost in the sectional play. In this, they'd beaten Port Macquarie by one shot, lost to St Johns Park by seven.
To win the section they had to beat Tuncurry by a mammoth 50 shots and rely on Port Macquarie to beat St Johns Park.
They beat Tuncurry by 51 (84-33) and Port Macquarie downed St Johns Park by two shots. South Lismore moved into the semi-final against Sydney powerhouse Merrylands. And won 62-50.
Only other Zone One side to win its section was Cudgen Leagues in No 7s with a plus 46. It lost the semi-final to Northmead by the skinniest of margins, 55-56.
