Sri Lankan asylum seekers voluntarily return to Columbo

ANOTHER six Sri Lankan asylum seekers have returned home, bringing the total to 936 since the Federal Government reinstated offshore processing in August.

The men returned to Colombo voluntarily this week, an immigration department spokesman said.

"They chose not to pursue their asylum claims and no longer seek to engage Australia's protection obligations," the spokesman said.

While further transfers to the offshore processing centre on Nauru would occur in the coming weeks, it was also expected more people would choose to return to their home country voluntarily, the spokesman said.
