IT'S not every day a role like US Marshall Raylan Givens comes along.

The central character of American drama Justified is a tough lawman enforcing his own brand of "extra legal" justice in his small Kentucky hometown.

But, more importantly, Raylan is at the heart of a show that even into its fourth series has received consistent critical acclaim.

Deadwood star Timothy Olyphant, who plays Raylan, says he knows how tough it is to land "something this cool".

"It's not lost on me how special this job is.

"At times it's easy to find yourself exhausted and frustrated and trying to figure out what the hell you're going to do next.

"I have to remind myself this is as good as it gets. When it comes together and is firing on all cylinders it's pretty special," he said.

The fourth series of Justified premiered on pay TV channel FX on Saturday.

"I feel like there's been a lot of really fascinating new characters and directions but at the same time it feels very familiar," Olyphant said.

"It's an action-packed year, so I don't think you'll be disappointed if that's what you're looking for. It's the same entertaining, perverse, comedic-twisted violence."

He says Raylan has "a lot on his mind" in the new series.

"The love of his life is pregnant and left him, his father tried to shoot him and he's trying to get through his day."

Justified - FX - Saturday at 6.30pm Qld, 7.30pm NSW
