Sonic Festival a Fine idea

Malcolm Fine is dreaming big. He would love to see the Lismore Showground packed with people, grooving to music and celebrating the culture and community of the Northern Rivers.

Malcolm is the organiser of the Sonic Festival, a two day music event to be held on May 29 and 30.

He started his working life as an apprentice chef at the Sydney Opera House, ran pubs, clubs and restaurants in Europe and Australia and put on some of the first European trance dance parties back in 1987. Since moving to the Northern Rivers a few years ago he managed the Winsome Hotel for a few years and got into the dance scene.

“I have been observing dance parties in the region and I got sick of driving five hours into the bush to go to illegal dance parties, so I’ve decided to put one on in Lismore and incorporate the dance culture into a music festival with bands and other forms of entertainment,” he said.

So far he has bands such as A French Butler Called Smith, Wild Marmalade, Tijuana Cartel and The Jones Club confirmed, with more to be announced soon. Electronic artists include Grouch, Shadow FX, Xenoscapes and Sun Control Species.

Malcolm has submitted a development application to Lismore City Council and plans to have the dance party in the main pavilion and the band stage outside in the arena. He also plans to have market stalls, carnival rides and street performers outside.

But in order to make the festival work, he needs more help. Malcolm is looking for volunteers to help out with everything from approaching sponsors, to working on the gate and cleaning up afterwards.

“I’ve hired the venue, put in the DA, arranged some bands and DJs and for the staging to be put in place, but now we need the community to come on board. If the community gets behind it, it will be a great festival, but if they don’t then there may not be a festival,” he said. “I now have over 40 SCU Music Department students, 30 Year 11 and 12 high school Students (Studying Entertainment), Tropical Fruits (Alcohol Service), the Lantern Parade (Stage decoration) and several highly skilled and experienced industry professionals that have all come on board to make this enchanting event happen!”
