Smeltz strike helps Sydney slip into last 16

AT least seven A League clubs will feature in the FFA Cup's round of 16 after Sydney FC and defending champion Adelaide recorded victories.

Following wins by Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory, a young Sydney FC outfit overcame a persistent Sorrento FC 2-0 in Perth.

A Shane Smeltz penalty after just three minutes and a late goal to Max Burgess was enough to get the Sky Blues home.

In the first game of its title defence, Adelaide United went down an early goal against Darwin Olympic in the Top End, but overran the locals 6-1 in the first game under new coach Guillermo Amor. Midfielder Jimmy Jeggo was one of Adelaide's best with two goals.

The round of 32 will wrap up next week and features all-A League games between Central Coast and Wellington, Newcastle and Perth, and the Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane.

Last year, six A League teams made the round of 16.
