Engineering firm gets smart with apps to streamline work

SMARTPHONES have changed the way we socialise and now they're influencing the operations of local business.

Purcell's Engineering has given about 30 of its workers iPhones with apps installed and training days aimed at streamlining procedure.

Site manager Mark van der Veer said a time clock app had cut down on paperwork.

"They'll log in out on site, which might be Moura," he said.

"Then that will come back to me and it gives me what time they logged in, what job it's for and what the GPS location is to make sure they're logging in where they're supposed to be logging in.

"It's awesome. We can look on Google maps and see where exactly they are at any time. And look back to any dates. It makes our time keeping an awful lot easier."

Managing director Terry Purcell said another app helped store information.

"(You) take a photo and put measurements on it so you remember it for when you're quoting," he said.

Mr van der Veer said simple apps such as a spirit level were not used in the workshop, but conversion-type apps came in handy.

"Just to convert metric to millimetres or how quick we should be running our tools," he said.
