A SKIPPER of a Whitsunday charter boat, who was drinking before a voyage, has been charged with drink-driving.

The boat named the 'Alexander Stewart' was taking passengers on a day trip to Whitehaven Beach last Wednesday.

Police said the skipper of the sailing boat had been drinking before the voyage and was still intoxicated.

It is believed that the crew ordered everyone off the boat at Whitehaven Beach as they thought it was unsafe to continue.

The captain of the boat was intercepted on the water by the Whitsunday Water Police as he attempted to make his way back to Airlie Beach.

Sergeant Graeme Pettigrew of the Whitsunday Water Police said charter boat captains must have a blood alcohol reading of zero.

"On recreational boats a skipper can have a blood alcohol reading of less than 0.05 per cent, the same as driving a car, but on commercial boats skippers must have zero," he said.

The passengers and crew were picked up by another tour company about an hour later after being left on Whitehaven Beach.

The skipper is due to appear in Proserpine Magistrates Court on November 18.
