Tracy Barnes’ sacrifice gives twin her shot at Olympics

OLYMPICS: Tracy Barnes had a special reason for making the US biathlon team for next month's Winter Olympics in Sochi: she wanted to give the spot to her twin sister Lanny.

As soon as she was named in the team last weekend Tracy (pictured) announced she would decline the place, meaning her sister would step up as the next in line.

Tracy said she made the sacrifice because Lanny had been too sick to compete in all the selection events.

After thinking her Olympic dream had been over, Lanny said it was hard to put into words the gratitude she felt for her sister.

"We have been training together every day for the past 15 years and I know how hard she has worked to make this team," Lanny said.

"I think that her selfless act encompasses what an Olympian truly is. I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity. It's not every day that you are given a second chance like this."
