SPANISH star David Silva quickly became a favourite son at Manchester City after joining the club from Valencia in 2010.

No doubt the love now goes both ways after he signed a new five-year contract worth potentially A$310,500-a-week.

Silva, last season voted runner-up in the EPL Player of the Year awards, will receive a base salary of A$186,300-a-week, plus bonuses depending on his performances and the team's results.

The deal will put him up with the likes of Carlos Tevez, Vincent Kompany and Ya Ya Toure as the highest earners at Manchester City.

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is reportedly the highest-paid footballer in the world, earning a staggering A$41.3 million-a-season.
