Bill Shorten: Labor has to "be the ones with ideas"

OPPOSITION Leader Bill Shorten has rallied the Labor troops, at the first meeting of his shadow cabinet this year in Brisbane.

Mr Shorten hosted the meeting during a week of campaigning with local candidate Terri Butler in the south Brisbane electorate of Griffith.

The Labor leader said while it was the Opposition's role to point out the failures of the Abbott Government, Labor also had to "be the ones with the ideas".

"And I want us to be a strong Opposition to the Abbott Government's assault on healthcare, jobs and cost-of-living," he said.

"But we will also be a positive, alternative Government. Labor will put forward the positive policies for the future - we will do the homework, the hard yards of opposition, unlike our predecessors."
