Shocking rise in elder abuse cases in Queensland

AS many as 71,900 elderly Queenslanders are being abused by their own families or trusted friends who are robbing them of their life savings and keeping them in conditions not fit for animals.

Queensland's Public Guardian has reported a tripling in tip-offs from good samaritans in the past two months as a State Government education campaign - There's No Excuse for Elder Abuse - exposes the insidious issue, the Courier Mail reports.

And while investigators say what they see no longer shocks them, they've found people robbed of millions of dollars, evicted from nursing homes, locked in filthy rooms in incontinence pads and without electricity, denied showers and toilet facilities and forced to live on junk food and ice blocks. One person was living with a cow in the house.

"When we get involved, things have reached point critical," Public Guardian Natalie Siegel-Brown said.
