Shield’s pink ball trial gets an early thumbs up

THE pink balls being used in the round of day/night Sheffield Shield matches that started yesterday have been given an early pass mark.

Players and officials said while the balls provided some early movement, they settled down after a few overs and played very much like the red balls that are normally used in the matches during daylight hours.

WA skipper Adam Voges was happy to bowl after winning the toss in the match against Queensland at the Gabba, with the home side on 3-136 after 61 overs on an overcast day that included a number of short rain delays.

Tasmania batted after winning the toss in its match against Victoria in Hobart and was 5-198 after 67 overs, while South Australia was in trouble at 5-142 after 65 overs against New South Wales at the Adelaide Oval after also winning the toss and batting.
