POWER has been restored to thousands of Sunshine Coast homes following a severe thunderstorm that tore over south-east Queensland Sunday night.

It brought about a soggy end  to a day that saw temperatures reach a high of 39.1 at Gympie and 38.7 degrees at Beerburrum.

They have also brought down powerlines, leaving more than 10,000 homes and businesses across south-east Queensland without power.

As of 7.30am Monday there were still 970 homes in the Gympie region waiting to be reconnected.

At the height of the storm, 2620 Sunshine Coast properties were without power.
